Ford Road Bridge Improvements
Dan's
Excavating, Inc. in conjunction with our sewer and roadwork also reconstruct and build bridges.
One
such project was the total demolition and reconstruction of the M-153 /
M-39 interchanges in Detroit. The
project was competitively bid to the Michigan Department of Transportation
at a contract price of $9,600,000.00.
Work began in the fall of 1998 and completed one year later on time. Traffic was continuously maintained during the total removal of the old two-bridge structure using staged construction. Weekend and night work operations avoided many disruptions and inconvenience to the motoring public.
Dan's Excavating, Inc. (DEI) began the project by first shifting M-153 traffic into a configuration allowing demolition of the old eastbound structure. Old median barrier wall was removed and temporary roadways built. Once the traffic was shifted, DEI removed the old bridge using our Komatsu PC 400 Excavator with a NPK 16X hydraulic breaker in tandem with a La Bounty Universal processor mounted on a Summitomo Excavator. Additionally, we used our Link Belt 100 ton 218A truck crane to remove approximately 200,000 pounds of structural steel. This same process was repeated in stage two.
During
the time of this major bridge reconstruction we also successfully
reconstructed all eight entrance and exit ramps servicing the interchange
and the adjacent service roads which totaled approximately 23,000 square
meters of concrete pavement reconstruction.
Major
subcontractors on the project were the concrete and bituminous pavers.
Slip-forming of the concrete median barrier was also subcontracted.
